1. Tap the '+' button on the Groups tab
2. Enter a group name (e.g., 'Roommates', 'Ski Trip 2025')
3. Optionally add a description
4. Tap 'Create Group'
5. Add members by inviting your friends who are already on SplitterUp
1. Tap the Profile tab
2. Select 'Friends' from the menu
3. Tap the '+' button
4. Search for friends by email or name
5. Send a friend request
6. Once they accept, you can add them to groups or split expenses directly
Yes! The iPad app runs natively on Apple Silicon Macs. You can download it from the Mac App Store. It's not an emulated phone app — it runs as a native desktop application with full keyboard and trackpad support.
Not yet. SplitterUp is available on iOS, macOS (Apple Silicon), and Android. A web version is planned for the future.
1. Open a group or go to the Expenses tab
2. Tap the '+' button
3. Enter the expense amount and description
4. Choose who paid
5. Select how to split it (equal or custom)
6. Tap 'Create Expense'
You can also scan receipts using the camera icon for automatic entry!
Groups & Friends
1. Open the group
2. Tap the settings icon (gear)
3. Scroll to 'Members' section
4. Tap 'Invite Members'
5. Select friends from your friends list
6. They'll receive a notification and can accept to join
Note: You can only invite people who are already your friends on SplitterUp.
Alternatively, you can share a guest invite link from Group Settings so anyone can join without needing a SplitterUp account.
Group Expenses: Split within a specific group. All group members can see the expense and their share.
Friend Expenses (P2P): Split directly between you and one or more friends without creating a group. Perfect for quick one-time splits like dinner or a movie.
Use P2P for casual, one-off expenses. Use groups for ongoing shared expenses.
You can send a guest invite link. Open the group, tap the settings icon, and select "Invite via Link." Share the link with anyone — they'll see the group details and can download the app to join. No account is needed to view the invitation.
There's no automatic import at this time. Most users settle their existing Splitwise balances and start fresh in SplitterUp for new expenses going forward. Since SplitterUp includes a 7-day free trial, you can test it alongside Splitwise before fully switching.
Yes! To leave a group:
1. Open the group and tap settings
2. Scroll to the bottom
3. Tap 'Leave Group'
4. Confirm your choice
Important: You must settle all outstanding balances before leaving. If you're the only admin, you'll need to assign another admin first.
Expenses & Splitting
SplitterUp offers flexible splitting options:
Equal Split: Divides the total equally among all participants
Custom Split: Manually set each person's share (by amount or percentage)
Unequal Split: Some people pay more than others based on what they ordered/used
You can also exclude certain group members from specific expenses.
SplitterUp can automatically extract expense details from receipts:
1. When creating an expense, tap the camera icon
2. Point your camera at the receipt, or choose an existing photo from your library
3. The app will detect the receipt automatically
4. Review the extracted information (total, merchant, date, items)
5. Assign items to group members
6. Tap 'Create Expense'
Discounts and coupons are detected automatically. Works best with clear, well-lit photos. Supports most printed receipts.
Yes! To edit an expense:
1. Tap on the expense to view details
2. Tap the edit icon (pencil)
3. Make your changes
4. Tap 'Save'
You can edit: Amount, Description, Who paid, How it's split, Date, and Category.
All members will see the updated expense and balances will recalculate automatically.
Features
Bank Import lets you connect your bank account and automatically sync transactions as expenses:
1. Go to the Bank Import tab
2. Connect your bank (7,000+ US banks supported)
3. Transactions sync automatically
4. Review each transaction and split it as an expense
Bank Import requires a subscription (monthly or annual). You also need a SplitterUp Premium account.
Guest Splits let you split expenses with anyone — no account or friendship needed. Just type a name to add a placeholder participant.
Placeholder participants settle manually. When you're ready to settle up, open the Settle Up page and use the checklist to mark each person as paid.
Great for one-time splits with acquaintances, coworkers, or anyone you don't need to add as a friend.
To enable biometric lock:
1. Go to Profile > Account Settings
2. Toggle on Face ID / Touch ID
3. Authenticate to confirm
Once enabled, the app will lock whenever it's been in the background for more than 5 seconds. You'll need to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID to unlock it.
Yes! When creating or editing an expense, tap the location field to tag where it happened.
You can use your current GPS location or search for a specific place. Tagged expenses appear on the group map, which you can access from the group screen.
Use the map's date filter and category toggle to explore expenses by time period or type.
To add an emoji avatar to a group:
1. Open the group
2. Tap the settings icon (gear)
3. Tap the group avatar at the top
4. Pick an emoji
The emoji will appear as the group's icon throughout the app.
Guest invite links let anyone join a group without needing a SplitterUp account:
1. Open the group and tap settings
2. Tap 'Guest Invite Link'
3. Share the link or QR code with anyone
When someone opens the link, they can join the group as a guest. Guests can participate in expenses and view the group, but have a simplified experience until they create a full account.
Badges are achievements you earn by hitting milestones — like creating your first expense, starting your first group, or splitting with a certain number of friends.
There are 17 badges across 5 tiers. View your badge collection on your profile page. New badges are awarded automatically as you use the app.
Yes! When creating an expense, tap the camera icon and choose to select a photo from your library instead of scanning with the live camera.
The app will extract the total, merchant, date, and individual items — just like a live scan. Discounts and coupons are detected automatically.
Payments & Settlements
To record that someone paid you (or you paid someone):
1. Go to the group or friend balance
2. Tap 'Record Payment'
3. Enter the amount
4. Select payment method (Venmo, PayPal, Cash, etc.)
5. Add an optional note
6. Tap 'Record'
The balance will update immediately for both people.
SplitterUp integrates with popular payment apps:
Venmo: Tap to open Venmo with pre-filled amount
Cash App: Tap to open Cash App using your $cashtag
PayPal: Tap to open PayPal.me with the amount pre-filled
Other methods: Record payments manually (bank transfer, cash, Zelle, etc.)
To set up your payment handles:
1. Go to Profile > Edit Profile
2. Add your Venmo username, $cashtag, and/or PayPal.me link
3. Friends can then tap to pay you directly through any of these apps
Yes! Within each group, SplitterUp automatically calculates the optimal way to settle up with the fewest transactions.
For example, if:
- Alice owes Bob $20
- Bob owes Charlie $20
Instead of two payments, Alice can pay Charlie $20 directly.
This simplification happens automatically in your balance view.

- Encrypted: All data is encrypted in transit and at rest
- Limited sharing: Only shared with friends/groups you explicitly join
- Data control: Export or delete your data anytime
- Minimal collection: We only collect what's necessary

To permanently delete your account:

2. Scroll to 'Danger Zone'
3. Tap 'Delete Account'
4. Confirm deletion
Important: This action cannot be undone. All your data will be permanently deleted including profile information, groups, expense history, and payment records.
Settle all balances before deleting.
